A visit to the Textile Museum

Een bezoek aan het Textielmuseum in Tilburg stond al een hele tijd op m’n wensenlijstje.  Vorige week ondernam ik de reis –per trein en ov-fiets- naar het zuiden, samen met Eline. De aanleiding was de expositie ‘Artists textiles’, een boeiende tentoonstelling van 20^e eeuwse kunstenaars die zich aan stofontwerpen waagden. In de tijd na de tweede wereldoorlog leggen veel kunstenaars zich toe op het ontwerpen van dessins speciaal geschikt voor stof. Zo maakten ze moderne kunst toegankelijk voor een veel groter publiek dan alleen de ‘happy few’. Opvallend kleurrijk en actueel nog (of opnieuw?) die dessins, het sprak me erg aan. Ook door de kleurrijke presentatie met grote blokken in knalroze en –geel, echt mooi vond ik!

A visit to the Textile Museum in Tilburg stood high on my wishlist for a while. Last week I visited the place together with Eline. The main motive was to visit the exposition of ‘Artists textiles’, about 20^th century artists fabricdesign. Lovely, colorful prints and still so accurate, very nice display too!

De vaste collectie van het museum is trouwens ook erg boeiend. Voor iemand zoals ik met een stof-verslaving en opleiding in die richting eigenlijk verplichte kost. De oude weefmachines leken hun tijd ver vooruit met ponskaarten die de weefpatronen aanstuurden. In het textiellab staan de moderne varianten, waar de mooiste stoffen worden ontwikkeld, geweven, gebreid, geprint etc.

Dus voor iedereen met een beetje interesse in textiel…op naar Tilburg!

The standard collection of the museum is worth a visit too, especially for a fabric-addict like me. Fascinating to see old and new machines at work and see beautiful fabrics arise.

So, if you are a bit interested in fabrics and textiles…you can’t miss this one!
